A Cosy Timeless Christmas
Simple festive joys to slow down, savour the season and make your home (or shepherd hut) feel magical.
There’s something special about Christmas - making your space all cosy, the glow of the tree lights, the warmth of a mug held in both hands, the rain (or snow, if we’re lucky) tapping gently outside while you settle in for a peaceful afternoon.
Whether you're spending the festive season tucked away in your shepherd hut, a cabin or creating moments of calm at home, here are some of our favourite simple festive activities to enjoy this season. No rush. No pressure. Just gentle, timeless Christmas joy.
1. Bake a gingerbread cabin
There’s nothing more comforting than the smell of gingerbread filling your home.
Try making your own “Timeless” cabin - using this classic recipe.
2. Go on a woodland walk & scavenger hunt
Bundle up, grab a basket and head into the woods or through country lanes.
See if you can spot or find:
A robin
A sprig of holly
An acorn
A winter flower
An oak leaf
A perfect walking stick
Bring home a handful of leaves or small branches and use them to decorate your hut or home - a simple garland made from nature’s own treasures!
3. Make a wreath from winter foliage
Use offcuts from your Christmas tree, bits of greenery from your garden, or foliage from nearby hedgerows.
Keep it rustic and imperfect - that’s the charm. Hang it on your door for a festive welcome!
4. Gather for a good old-fashioned sing-song
Carols around the fire, or your favourite Christmas songs played from a speaker - either way, it’s joy in its purest form. Here are some favourite carols and their lyrics
And if you can play an instrument… even better!
5. Decorate the table & eat by candlelight
Even a simple supper feels special when eaten by candlelight.
Lay out a few branches of greenery, add tealights or a handful of baubles, and enjoy a slow, peaceful meal with loved ones.
6. Watch It’s a Wonderful Life
A timeless classic that feels even more magical when wrapped in blankets and sipping a hot chocolate.
7. Make a donation to your local foodbank
A small act that can make a big difference.
A lovely tradition to build into the Chriostmas period, and a reminder of what truly matters.
8. Create a bauble garland
If you’ve got spare baubles, tie them to string or ribbon and hang them across a beam, above a doorway or along your shepherd hut or garden room wall.
Sparkly, simple, and instantly festive.
9. Make homemade Christmas cards and hand deliver them
Get out the craft box, cut and glue to your heart’s content, and make cards that feel personal and thoughtful.
Hand deliver them to neighbours - a small gesture to build connection.
10. Make Mulled Wine or Mulled Apple Juice
Fill your home with the smell of cinnamon, orange and cloves!
Try this lovely recipe from BBC Good Food for mulled wine or mulled apple juice.
